Electricity and the Environment

These student resources are available in different formats depending on how you plan to use them. If you will be assigning these through Google Classroom, we recommend the Google slides versions, which is the most user friendly option. We also have Google Docs versions available. The Google links send you to a webpage that will ask you to make your own copy of the resource, which you can adapt as you want for your student(s). We also have fully offline pdf versions that you can download and print.

Grade 4

Students will explore circuits and electricity generation to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by electric currents. Students will begin to understand how they can take action to save energy.

Driving question:

How is energy transferred as I light a lamp? 

Learning targets:

  • Demonstrate how electricity is transferred using circuits in different applications
  • Analyze costs in different types of light bulbs
  • Design a goal to change personal use/habits of electricity

Grade 5

Students will explore electricity generation, including renewable energy, and its impacts on Earth’s spheres. Students can design a personal goal to use less electricity to protect the earth. 

Driving questions:

How does the way we generate and use electricity impact our environment? What can we do to reduce our negative impacts?

Learning targets: 

  • Demonstrate how electricity is generated
  • Explore renewable energy and compare the impacts of electricity on the different spheres of the Earth
  • Design a personal goal to use less electricity to protect the earth’s resources and environment

Grades 6-8

Students will explore electricity and magnetism forces, how much electricity we use and the impacts on the environment. Students can design a SMART goal to decrease personal or community electricity consumption.

Driving questions:

How can we decrease the negative environmental impacts of our electricity use? What can we do in our homes? Our school? Our communities?

Learning targets:

  • Understand the factors that affect electric and magnetic forces using Faraday’s Coil
  • Analyze data on consumption of natural resources and how they impact Earth’s systems
  • Design a SMART goal to decrease personal consumption of electricity
