Sun FUNdamentals

Introduce your youngest students to sun and shade! Sun FUNdamentals is an introductory unit on light and shadows for K–3. Students use engineering principles to build shade structures.

Driving questions:

How does sunlight behave when different materials are placed in the light’s path? How can we slow down the warming effects of the sun?

Learning targets:

  • Analyze data from tests with light on different materials.
  • Design a solution using evidence to slow down the warming effects of the earth.
  • Develop a physical model to illustrate how the design meets the needs of others.
